Our Approach to Fact-Checking
Booze.co.uk is published by Alcohol Ltd and is regulated by IPSO. Our fact-checking process is designed to meet the Editors' Code of Practice, especially Clause 1 on accuracy.
We take care over facts, headlines, images, captions, data, and article summaries. We distinguish clearly between comment, conjecture and fact, and we correct significant inaccuracies promptly and transparently.
Verification Process
Primary Sources
We prioritise primary sources wherever possible. This includes:
- Official company statements, press releases, and regulatory filings
- Government publications and parliamentary records
- Industry bodies such as www.alcohol.co.uk, the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA), British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA), and UK Hospitality
- HMRC data and official UK Government statistics
- Direct interviews with named, authoritative sources
Multiple Sources
For significant claims, allegations, or disputed matters, we seek corroboration from multiple independent sources. Single-source stories are published only where the source is authoritative, the information is directly evidenced, and the article explains the basis for the claim.
Document Verification
When reporting on documents, data, or research, we verify authenticity and review the original source material. We do not rely solely on summaries or third-party interpretations.
Data and Statistics
When reporting statistics and data, we:
- Cite the original source and methodology where available
- Provide context for figures (e.g., time periods, sample sizes, geographical scope)
- Note any limitations or caveats in the data
- Use the most recent available data unless historical comparison is relevant
- Cross-reference industry data with official government statistics where possible
Source attribution should be clear enough for readers to understand where a claim or statistic comes from, while respecting confidential sources where the Editors' Code protects them.
Editorial Review
All articles undergo editorial review before publication. This process includes:
- Verification of key facts and figures
- Review of source attribution
- Assessment of balance and fairness
- Legal review where necessary
- Headline accuracy check
For breaking news, initial verification is prioritised, with additional context and confirmation added as information becomes available. Updates are clearly timestamped.
Headlines, Images, And Context
Editors' Code accuracy duties apply to headlines, standfirsts, captions, images, video, charts, and social summaries as well as article body text. Before publication, editors check that presentation does not create a misleading impression of the facts.
Right of Reply
When making allegations or reporting matters that may be disputed, we make reasonable efforts to contact relevant parties for comment before publication. Where comment is not provided, this is noted in the article. After publication, a fair opportunity to reply may be offered where required by the Editors' Code.
Handling Uncertainty
Where information cannot be fully verified but is newsworthy:
- We clearly attribute claims to their source
- We use appropriate language to indicate the level of certainty
- We present alternative viewpoints where relevant
- We update stories as more information becomes available
Sensitive Reporting
For reporting involving grief, shock, children, vulnerable people, discrimination, sexual assault, hospitals, crime, or suicide, fact-checking also includes a Code compliance review. We do not identify victims of sexual assault unless legally permitted and justified.
In reports of suicide, we avoid excessive detail of the method unless there is a clear public interest reason to include it.
Expert Consultation
For complex or technical topics, we consult relevant experts including industry analysts, legal specialists, economists, public health professionals, and regulatory sources where appropriate.
Errors and Corrections
Despite our best efforts, errors may occasionally occur. When they do, we correct significant inaccuracies promptly and with due prominence in accordance with our Corrections Policy.
